Finally it happened. India beat Australia by 72 runs in the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar series.
Indian teammates Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly celebrate their victory over Australia on Day 4 of the third Test match at the WACA stadium in Perth on January 19, 2008.
Australia started Day 4 with their overnight score of 65/2. Delhi pacer Ishant Sharma struck and got Ricky Ponting, who was looking dangerous, caught by Dravid. RP Singh soon claimed Mike Hussey and Jumbo sent dangerman Andrew Symonds back to the pavilion. Though Michael Clarke and Mitchell Johnson posed some threat but they could not defy the inevitable.
After the Sydney Test fiasco, India came back hard on the mighty Aussies and defeated them on a pitch that was hailed as graveyard for the sub-continent teams.
This win has not only hurt the Australian pride but also put an end to their winning streak of 17 matches. Apart from this, Australia had an amazing record of not losing last 25 Test matches on their soil. They won 22 out of them and drew 3. It's worth mentioning that this record came into existence after their defeat to India in Adelaide in 2003-04. And it's India again to put an end to this record. Life indeed is a vicious cycle.
From day one of the Perth Test, India were on top and every player chipped in. Virender Sehwag, the comeback man, contributed not only with the bat but also bowled beautifully and claimed two precious wickets. From senior pros like Kumble, Laxman etc to young bloods Ishant and Irfan, everyone contributed in this cause of historic win.
Let's savour this stupendous victory and congratulate Team India.
Just a wandering thought, what if Sydney Test was without those umpiring blunders? What would have the scoreboard read, 2-1 in India's favour?
