‘Eve-teasing will end once we retaliate’
24-year-old Abha Sharma has set an example by striking back at two men harassing her, even as people around her just watched on. Now, she says, that is the only way women can safeguard themselves in this apathetic city

It is a scenario that any single woman in the city knows only too well. You are travelling in a bus with about 40 co-passengers and suddenly two men start passing lewd comments, the bus goes all quiet as everybody is busy looking the other way. And what are you supposed to do? Behave as if you heard and saw nothing, for the men eve-teasing you can physically harm you as well. Only 24-year-old Abha Sharma refused to listen to any of this and turned the tables on the men harassing her as well as those who quietly watched but refused to help.
This karate trainer was travelling from her residence in Daryaganj to Bhogal for work when two men started eveteasing her. “It was too much for me to handle. There were so many people in the bus but nobody said a thing. Finally I decided to get down from the bus at Jangpura,” says Abha. But her nightmare was just starting.
“They also got down from the bus and started following me... they were using very foul language. Again I was in a crowded area with many people around me but nobody paid heed or helped me. That’s when I decided to hit back rather than take it all quietly,” Abha says. When she hit one of the men, he took out a blade and attacked Abha with it. “He asked the other ‘kar du iska kaam?’ and attacked me. I got a severe cut on my chin but I continued fighting. The duo soon realised that things were getting out of hand. The one with the blade ran away but I managed to hold the other one. The police arrested him later,” she says. Abha, a DU pass-out, has always been a sports enthusiast. “But I never knew that one day that will save my life,” she says. Abha’s mother, Suman, now wants her younger daughter Himanshi to also learn karate. Abha believes, “It’s high time that the women in Delhi should stand up for themselves. Nobody will come to their help and they have to save themselves from this constant harassment. The day all of them retaliate and hit these miscreants back, all teasing will stop.”
ANIL SHUKLA, DCP (South)
“It is very sad that we have turned insensitive to people around us. What this girl did should be considered as a start and other women should follow her example. At the same time, it is hard to believe that eve-teasers can do such drastic things with so many people around. It is time that we take up the responsibility to react”
MADHU KISHWAR, Women’s rights activist
“Why just this city, the men of this country cannot save themselves so you can forget about them saving anyone else! Women have realised that they have to take care of themselves rather than rely on people around them. What Abha did is an apt example”
How you take the whole scenario ...
Is this the only Solution..........................
How can one contribute....to fight against the insensitive to people around us.
Will Eve-teasing end if every one start following 24-year-old Abha Sharma
Is this really easy for every one to follow the smart gal..........
If not what are other alternatives..
